An insulated panel is steel sheeting bonded to an insulating core with a finished underside. Over a patio or an extension it does three jobs at once: it roofs the space, it insulates it, and it gives you a clean ceiling without needing to line it separately.
They are particularly worth considering over outdoor living areas that face west, where a plain steel roof radiates heat down all afternoon, and over rooms where the roof is also the ceiling.
