Terracotta tiles are made from natural fired clay, last 50–100 years, never fade (the colour is the clay), and develop a beautiful patina with age. Terracotta is the right choice for heritage homes and where long-term character matters. They're heavier and more expensive than concrete tiles.

Concrete tiles are mass-produced from sand, cement and pigment. They typically last 30–50 years and require their factory finish refreshed every 12–20 years. Concrete is significantly cheaper than terracotta, comes in a wide range of profiles and colours, and is the most common tile type on Sydney homes built between 1960 and 2000.
