Gutter guard earns its keep on properties under trees, where clearing gutters is otherwise a recurring cost. A good mesh keeps leaf and bark out while letting water through, and turns a twice-yearly job into an occasional one.

On bushfire-prone land it does something more important. A gutter full of dry gum leaf is exactly the fuel an ember is looking for, and ember attack — not the fire front — is what ignites most homes. If your property carries a BAL rating, the guard needs to be specified to suit it, in a non-combustible material.

It is not a substitute for ever looking at your roof again, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. Fine debris still accumulates on top of the mesh.
