Heritage Terracotta Tile Roof Restoration — Willoughby East

About This Project

Full heritage-grade restoration of an original terracotta tile roof on a character home in Willoughby East. The roof was returned to a heritage-correct standard so the home's period character was preserved rather than modernised. Crown Roofers carried out a complete documentation pass, then pressure-cleaned the entire roof to remove decades of lichen, moss and surface contamination, replaced cracked and broken tiles with matching salvaged heritage stock, fully re-bedded every ridge and hip in polymer-modified mortar, and re-pointed the entire roofline with flexible coloured pointing tinted to match the original aged terracotta. Valleys were stripped, re-flashed and re-sealed; ridge cappings were realigned to the original profile.

The Challenge

The brief was explicit: the finished roof had to read as the original heritage roof — restored, not replaced. That ruled out any membrane recoat or colour-change product, because both flatten the variegated tile surface into a single tone. Sourcing a tile that matched the existing aged terracotta in colour, profile and weather-pattern took several supplier callouts before we located a matching salvaged batch. Pointing colour was custom-tinted on-site against the cleaned tile field rather than pulled off a standard colour chart, so the new mortar lines disappeared into the existing roofline instead of standing out as fresh repairs.

The Outcome

A heritage roof returned to its original character — colour-matched tiles, hand-tinted pointing, and re-bedded ridges that read as period-correct rather than as modern repairs.
